Getting Ready

Linking Data Sets

You are recommended to discuss your requirements with the appropriate data custodian experts, in particular any requests for data linkages. They will have knowledge of any limitations and constraints in this area. In addition, they may also be able to advise who can assist you in linking the data sets, if you require such a service.

Some data sets are already linked on a regular basis. It is expected that once a request has been approved, access to these linked data sets can be provided within reasonable timescales. The following data sets are regularly linked:

  • Any Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data sets and ONS mortality data

  • Any Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and Patient Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMs)

  • Any Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and Mental Health & Learning Disability Data Set (MHLDDS)

  • Any Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and Diagnostic Imaging Dataset (DID)

  • Any Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and National Cancer Registration Service (NCRS)

  • Any Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and CPRD Primary Care data

  • Any Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), CPRD Primary Care data, and ONS mortality data

  • National Cancer Registration Service (NCRS) and CPRD Primary Care data

  • National Cancer Registration Service (NCRS) and ONS mortality data

New data linkages can be established, providing there are no constraints or limitations to do this. These requirements will be managed as new product requests and will require some time to determine the methods for linkages. We recommend you discuss these requirements with the appropriate data custodian experts to understand the effort and actions that will be needed to fulfil these requests.
